چکیده

B reastfeeding is the preferred method of feeding infants up to 12 months of age (1). Breastfed infants experience fewer and less severe infections and may be protected against future disease development (2). Mothers who breastfeed potentially experience accelerated weight loss (3), a lower risk of breast and ovarian cancer (3), and a lower risk of type 2 diabetes than mothers who do not breastfeed (4). Breastfeeding is recommended for all women, including those with gestational (5) or pregestational (6) diabetes. However, data suggest that diabetic women may experience hypoglycemia during breastfeeding; subsequently, they have been advised to eat before or during breastfeeding to avoid hypoglycemia (6). Because data on blood glucose fluctuations in normoglycemic women are limited, we tested the hypothesis that lactation in healthy normoglycemic women will not cause significant blood glucose fluctuations.

Whole body insulin resistance in rat offspring of mothers consuming alcohol during pregnancy or lactation: comparing prenatal and postnatal exposure.

This study examined the effects of maternal ethanol (EtOH) consumption during pregnancy or lactation on glucose homeostasis in the adult rat offspring. Glucose disposal was determined by minimal model during an intravenous glucose tolerance test in rats that had a small or normal birth weight after EtOH exposure in utero and in rats whose mothers were given EtOH during lactation only. All three...

Glycemic Control and Glucose Fluctuations in Pregnancy and the Progression of Retinopathy in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: Retrospective study

Although evidences have shown that long term near normal glycemic control delays the progression of microvascular complications in type 1 diabetes including retinopathy [1-3], rapid near normalization of glycemic control has been suggested to accelerate the progression of retinopathy in nonpregnant [4-8] and pregnant [9-12] diabetic patients. Progression of diabetic retinopathy during pregnancy...

In dairy cattle, the increase in milk yield has been accompanied by a more negative energy balance during early lactation and a decrease in fertility. The 167 amino acid protein product of the ob gene was named leptin (derived from the Greek term ‘leptos’ meaning thin). The leptin hormone, as a 16-kDa protein is synthesized mainly by adipose tissue and is involved in regulation of food intake, ...
